Air Canada Aeroplan and World of Hyatt offer a targeted status challenge for upper-tier Hyatt elite members. By linking both loyalty accounts, World of Hyatt Explorist and Globalist members can fast-track their way to Aeroplan Elite Status—ranging from 25K up to 75K—by earning a reduced number of Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) within 90 days of registration.
This partnership gives frequent Hyatt guests a straightforward path to airport priority services, complimentary checked baggage, and lounge access when flying on Air Canada and Star Alliance partners. Below is a breakdown of the eligibility rules, qualifying flight activities, and timing considerations to maximize the status validity period.
Eligibility and Registration Process
To participate in the Aeroplan Elite Status Challenge, you must meet three baseline criteria at the time you submit your registration:
- Hold both an Aeroplan account and a World of Hyatt account in good standing.
- Link your Aeroplan and World of Hyatt accounts through the official partnership portal.
- Hold active World of Hyatt Explorist or Globalist status at the moment of registration. World of Hyatt Discoverist and base members are not eligible.
To enroll, you must sign in to your World of Hyatt account on the challenge offer page to access the registration button. Keep in mind that your 90-day qualification window does not necessarily begin the second you click submit. Instead, the 90 consecutive calendar days start on the “Registration Date,” which is the date Aeroplan processes and records your request.
Processing and eligibility verification can take up to 48 hours. Once approved, you will receive a confirmation email detailing your exact start and end dates. You should submit your registration at least two to three days before your first planned flight to ensure your departure falls safely inside the active 90-day window.
Members who already hold an Aeroplan Elite Status earned outside of this challenge that is equal to or higher than the maximum tier available in their challenge—and is already valid through the following calendar year—cannot enroll. However, you can use this challenge to extend expiring status. For example, if you are a Hyatt Explorist holding Aeroplan 25K status that expires on January 31, 2027, you are permitted to register during 2026. Completing the challenge extends your 25K status through January 31, 2028.
Qualification Thresholds by Hyatt Tier
Your World of Hyatt tier at the exact time of registration locks in the specific challenge track you are placed on. During the 90-day period, you must earn Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) through eligible Air Canada activity.
| World of Hyatt Tier at Registration | Required SQC within 90 Days | Awarded Aeroplan Elite Status |
|---|---|---|
| Explorist | 8,000 SQC | Aeroplan 25K |
| Globalist | 8,000 SQC | Aeroplan 25K |
| Globalist | 12,000 SQC | Aeroplan 35K |
| Globalist | 17,000 SQC | Aeroplan 50K |
| Globalist | 25,000 SQC | Aeroplan 75K |
A critical rule to remember is that your challenge track cannot be changed after you register. If you enroll as an Explorist, your maximum achievable tier is Aeroplan 25K. Even if you complete enough hotel stays to reach Hyatt Globalist status midway through your 90-day window, your challenge will not convert to the Globalist track. If you are close to earning Globalist status, wait until that tier upgrade posts to your Hyatt account before registering with Aeroplan.
How to Accumulate Eligible SQC
Not all Status Qualifying Credits count toward this challenge. Qualification is strictly limited to specific revenue tickets and vacation packages, and the earning rate depends on the ticketing airline, operating carrier, and fare class.
Qualifying Flights and Earning Rates
SQC for flights are calculated based on your base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges, excluding government taxes, fees, and third-party charges (note that Air Canada calculates baseline figures in Canadian Dollars; $1 CAD is approximately $0.72 USD):
- Tickets issued by Air Canada (ticket numbers starting with 014): Valid on flights operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Express, Air Canada Rouge, or Star Alliance and select partner airlines. You earn 2 SQC per $1 spent on Economy Standard fares, and 4 SQC per $1 spent on Economy Flex fares or higher (including Comfort, Latitude, Premium Economy, and Business Class).
- Tickets issued by other airlines (ticket numbers not starting with 014): Valid strictly on flights operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Express, or Air Canada Rouge. You earn 2 SQC per $1 spent in Economy Class (Standard or higher), and 4 SQC per $1 spent in Premium Economy and Business Class.
- Air Canada Vacations packages: You earn 1 SQC per $1 spent on the full package value per member—which includes taxes and fees—regardless of the cabin class booked.
To put the spending requirements into perspective, a Hyatt Globalist aiming for Aeroplan 50K status needs 17,000 SQC. By booking Air Canada-ticketed Economy Flex or Business Class fares (earning 4 SQC per $1), you would need $4,250 CAD (roughly $3,060 USD) in eligible base fare and carrier surcharges within 90 days. An Explorist aiming for 25K status (8,000 SQC) on the same fare types would need $2,000 CAD (roughly $1,440 USD) in eligible pre-tax spend.
Excluded Activities and Timing Rules
When planning your flights, avoid the following non-qualifying bookings and credit sources:
- Economy Basic fares.
- Aeroplan flight rewards, including Points + Cash bookings.
- Specialty tickets such as unpublished, bulk, group, and tour fares.
- Promotional SQC earned from flight campaigns, bonus offers, or non-flight activities (such as co-branded credit card spending).
Furthermore, eligible flights must depart within your 90-day challenge window. Flights departing before your official Registration Date or after your 90th day will not count. While SQC can take up to 14 days to appear on your Aeroplan dashboard tracker, Air Canada provides a 120-day crediting allowance period after the 90-day window closes. As long as the flight departed during the active 90-day period, delayed credits posting within those 120 days will be counted.
Aeroplan Elite Status Core Benefits
Once you hit a qualifying threshold, your Aeroplan account will update to the new status within 72 hours. If you earn status organically on your own during the challenge (for example, reaching 50K on a Globalist challenge), you keep that status and remain enrolled to push for 75K. However, if you organically reach a tier equal to or higher than the maximum offered by your challenge through outside means, you are removed from the challenge for the rest of the year.
| Status Tier | Preferred Seat Selection | Complimentary Checked Bags | Airport Priority Services | Lounges & eUpgrades |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aeroplan 25K | Free at check-in on eligible fares | 1 extra bag (23 kg) | Priority check-in and boarding | 5 eUpgrade credits |
| Aeroplan 35K | Free at check-in on eligible fares | 3 bags (32 kg each) | Priority security (up to 8 companions) and boarding | 10 eUpgrade credits |
| Aeroplan 50K | Free at booking (Canada/U.S. routes) or check-in (other routes) | 3 bags (32 kg each) | Priority security (up to 8 companions) and boarding | Maple Leaf Lounge & Air Canada Café access; 15 eUpgrade credits |
| Aeroplan 75K | Free at booking on all eligible fares | 3 bags (32 kg each) | Priority security (up to 8 companions) and boarding | Maple Leaf Lounge & Air Canada Café access; 20 eUpgrade credits |
Both 25K and 35K tiers also waive handling fees for sports equipment within the standard free baggage allowance. For most international travelers, the 50K tier is the primary sweet spot, as it introduces Maple Leaf Lounge access and equates to Star Alliance Gold status.
Status Validity and Strategic Timing
The expiration date of the status you earn through this challenge is tied strictly to the calendar year in which you register, rather than the date you finish the 90-day flight requirements. Awarded status remains valid until January 31 of the second calendar year following your year of registration.
Consider how the registration date affects your validity window:
- If you register on September 1, 2026, or November 1, 2026, and complete the requirements within 90 days (even if your final qualifying flight lands in January 2027), your earned status is valid until January 31, 2028.
- If you wait to register until February 1, 2027, and complete the challenge within 90 days, your status will remain valid until January 31, 2029.
Because you are limited to one challenge attempt per calendar year, failing to meet the SQC requirement within 90 days means your status remains unchanged and you cannot try again until the next calendar year (and only after your initial 90-day period has fully expired).
Unless you have immediate, high-value Air Canada flights booked for the final months of 2026, waiting until early January or February to register will give you nearly two full years of elite status once you complete the requirements.
